Langford turfs artificial grass deal
For five years, Langford has required developers to use artificial turf in the sidewalk boulevards they build. The city also installed artificial grass in public medians and boulevards thinking that reduced maintenance would save money over time, even if the cost was higher.
Now, staff have reported to council that “anticipated savings have not been met.”
In 2017, when Langford council initially made this decision, artificial turf cost $65 more per meter to install than a metre of sod. Instead of requiring developers to install the more expensive product, council agreed to pay two-thirds of the cost, and take on maintenance duties sooner.
The city expected less maintenance costs would lead to savings over time, but the assumptions have proven to be wrong.

On a mid-November evening, Scott Goodmanson sat for the first time in the seat that had been dominated for 30 years by one man: Stew Young. He ran the first regular meeting of the new council, flanked by councillors—all new, save for one—and city staff.
The agenda for that first regular meeting was light, the main item being a recommendation from staff to reduce development cost charges allocated for stormwater projects. It may not have sounded like a revolution, but for Langford, it was the result of one.
After adjourning, Goodmanson extricated himself from the centre chair and moved to the back of the room, where a few people lingered.
A plate of baking had been set out at the entrance. He picked it up and went to introduce himself.
“Hi, I’m Scott,” the new mayor said. “Would you like a cookie?”

🚧 Construction on Sooke Potholes improvements will begin March 27, and should be mostly complete by the May long weekend. Disruptions to park access will be minimal. Improvements to the gateway parking lot include additional parking, widening two beach access staircases, two accessible pit toilets, and additional signage.

🚌 **Colwood getting a $20 million BC Transit distribution centre:**The warehouse to be built at the “Allandale pit” will house parts for buses across BC, BC Transit told CHEK that it will replace the overburdened Langford location that is currently used, freeing up space for local maintenance needs.
