The B.C. Hockey League's 2027 All-Star Weekend will land at the Q Centre on January 22 and 23, with the Victoria Grizzlies as host.
For hockey fans, the useful part is straightforward. The announced program includes a Canada-versus-World All-Star game, an alumni-and-friends game, a skills competition, and participation from the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League and Western Junior A Hockey League.
Ticket details, rosters, jerseys, accommodation packages and the full event format are still to come.
The less settled part is what Langford is paying to bring the weekend here.
What the city has said
Langford calls itself a significant sponsor. Mayor Scott Goodmanson said the city is reinvesting hotel-tax revenue to attract events and tourism.
The tax is the Municipal and Regional District Tax, a provincial program that adds two per cent to eligible short-term accommodation in Langford. The province describes the revenue as money for local tourism marketing, programs and projects.
That makes the logic of the sponsorship easy to see: use money collected from overnight stays to attract an event that may create more overnight stays.
The August 13 city and league announcements do not state the sponsorship amount. They also do not spell out the term, any in-kind city support, the deliverables promised to Langford, or the measures that would be used to judge the investment.
That is a narrow statement about the announcements. It is not proof that no agreement or approval exists elsewhere in the public record.
One geographic wrinkle
The Q Centre sits at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Centre in Colwood, even though Langford is the municipal sponsor named in the announcement. The arena is operated by West Shore Parks and Recreation, a shared service supported by several West Shore municipalities.
The event is therefore both a Langford tourism play and a regional venue story.
What to watch before January
The next useful release will include ticket prices and the complete schedule. The next useful public record will include the sponsorship value and what Langford receives in return.
The weekend does not need a grand economic promise to be worth attending. It does need a clear price if residents are going to judge the public investment fairly.
